An immigration judge has rejected efforts by the Trump administration to deport Rumeysa Ozturk, a Tufts University PhD student who was arrested last year amid a broader crackdown on anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian campus activism, according to her lawyers.
The decision was outlined in a filing submitted Monday to the New York–based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The court has been reviewing a prior ruling that resulted in Ozturk’s release from immigration custody in May.
Ozturk, a Turkish national, had been held as part of immigration enforcement actions that critics say targeted student activists. Her legal team argues the case raises serious concerns about free expression and due process.

The appeals court review is ongoing, but the immigration judge’s ruling marks a significant development in Ozturk’s favor as the legal process continues.
