WASHINGTON D.C. – US Congressman Riley M. Moore has formally delivered a detailed congressional report to President Donald Trump, urging immediate and sweeping policy changes to combat escalating violence targeting Christian communities across Nigeria. The report’s recommendations are far-reaching, notably including a call for the repeal of Sharia and blasphemy laws currently in effect in various parts of the country, which critics argue disproportionately affect religious minorities.

Moore, who serves on both the House Committees on Appropriations and Foreign Affairs, announced the submission in a press release issued from Washington. He stated that he joined fellow committee members at the White House to present what he characterized as a “comprehensive report outlining concrete actions to end the persecution of Christians in Nigeria and counter growing extremist violence in the region.”

The presentation of the report follows President Trump’s decisive action on October 31, 2025, to redesignate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) under the US International Religious Freedom Act. According to Congressman Moore, the President specifically tasked him and House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole with leading a congressional investigation into what the President termed “the persecution against Christian communities and security challenges plaguing Nigeria.”

The report, Moore emphasized, is the product of an exhaustive, multi-month-long investigation. This comprehensive inquiry involved a wide array of activities, including a critical bipartisan congressional fact-finding trip to Nigeria. The investigation also incorporated formal hearings featuring expert witnesses, extensive consultations with various religious leaders, direct meetings with Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who have fled the violence, and high-level engagement with senior officials within the Nigerian government.

Reflecting on his direct experience in the region, Congressman Moore shared a powerful personal testimony in his statement: “I travelled on a bipartisan delegation to Nigeria and saw with my own eyes the horrific atrocities Christians face, and the instability the Nigerian government must combat.” This firsthand observation underscored the urgency and gravity of the findings presented in the congressional report, which aims to mobilize the US administration to take a more aggressive stance against the systemic persecution and escalating extremist threats in Nigeria. The report is expected to serve as a critical blueprint for future US foreign policy and aid initiatives directed toward securing religious freedom and stability in the West African nation.
