Simple for the Customer. Complex Under the Hood. By Dr. Louis Anegekuh

A customer asked me recently: “Why is your KiiBank app so much easier to sign up for than my bank’s app?”

She has been with her bank for years. They recently launched a mobile app. To activate it, she said, it took almost two weeks. Forms. Waiting. Email confirmations. More waiting.

With KiiBank, she submitted her passport, proof of address, and a selfie. Within minutes, her account was live and operational.

Then she said something else that made me reflect. “I watched my bank’s ‘How To’ video. Their dashboard has almost twelve icons. Yours has about six. But everything I need is there.”

That is not accidental. Simplicity is not the absence of complexity. It is the discipline of hiding it.

In financial services, the real work happens beneath the surface—compliance layers, KYC validation, fraud monitoring, ledger structures, integrations. Customers do not need to see that machinery. They need clarity. They need speed. They need confidence. They need a clean interface that does not overwhelm them.

If opening a banking app takes weeks in a digital age, something in the architecture is misaligned. Often, legacy systems are layered with digital wrappers instead of being re-engineered for digital-first operations.

We chose a different path.

We built the complexity into the backend where it belongs.
We kept the front end intentional and minimal.
Every icon earns its place.

The customer ended the conversation jokingly: “Maybe my bank should contact you to teach them how to build a banking app.”

I smiled. Moments like this remind me why we started. Not to compete on noise. Not to add more features than necessary. But to solve real friction points through thoughtful system design.

Banking should feel simple. It should not feel like a project.

Simplicity in digital banking is rarely about design alone. It is about architecture decisions made long before the user logs in.

What friction in financial services do you believe we’ve normalised for too long?
