Pieter Mulier is officially departing Alaïa, the storied French fashion house where he served as Creative Director since 2021.
Mulier’s appointment was historic, as he was the first designer to take the creative helm following the passing of founder Azzedine Alaïa in 2017. Before his influential tenure at Alaïa, the Belgian designer was a long-time collaborator of Raf Simons, working closely with him at prestigious labels including Dior, Jil Sander, and Calvin Klein. His work at Alaïa received high praise, even earning him the International Award at the 2025 CFDA Awards, presented by Alaïa’s legendary muse, Naomi Campbell.
Under Mulier, the Alaïa brand—renowned for its sculptural forms, sensuality, and futuristic edge—cemented its status as a celebrity favorite. Zendaya was an early champion, showcasing his vision from his debut collection with a striking plum-toned, ab-baring outfit and mermaid skirt at the Paris photocall for Dune. Kaia Gerber also embraced the aesthetic, opting for a sexy, body-con turtleneck dress with a gathered burgundy skirt for the 2022 Academy Gala.

Perhaps the most significant endorsement came from Rihanna, who repeatedly chose Mulier’s designs for pivotal moments. For her highly anticipated return to the stage at the 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show, she wore an iconic cherry red Alaïa jumpsuit complete with a shiny breastplate. Mulier also played a key role in defining her maternity wardrobe, designing the aqua cutout-riddled dress for the Highest 2 Lowest premiere at Cannes and the memorable hip-padded skirt and hooded crop top ensemble worn for a night out at Giorgio Baldi.

As the industry reflects on Mulier’s influential three years, here is a look back at the most celebrated celebrity style moments from his time at Alaïa.
