The United States has deployed a military team to Nigeria as part of expanded cooperation to combat militant groups operating across West Africa, according to U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM).
AFRICOM said the deployment followed high-level discussions with Nigerian authorities, stressing the need for closer coordination and intelligence-sharing to address escalating terrorist threats in the region.
The move comes just weeks after US President Donald Trump ordered airstrikes on suspected Islamic State–linked targets in Nigeria, warning that further US military action could follow if the threat persists.

Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, confirmed that a US team is currently operating in the country but declined to disclose details regarding its size, mission, or duration.
The development signals a deepening security partnership between Washington and Abuja at a time when insurgency and extremist violence continue to challenge stability across parts of Nigeria and the wider Sahel region.
